Six teams with realistic chance of making top four

There are six teams still realistically vying for the four playoff spots a third of the way into the Central Otago premier competition.

Matakanui Combined and Alexandra, on the other hand, need drastic form reversals to get them into contention.

Wakatipu, Upper Clutha and Arrowtown look odds-on to make the four while Cromwell, Maniototo and Clyde Earnscleugh are locked in a battle for the fourth spot.

Cromwell, the 2016 champion, appears to be the frontrunner for fourth but needs to find consistency.

Maniototo will not take much encouragement to step up and Clyde Earnscleugh could be the dark horse for the four if the other two falter.

Leader Wakatipu (26) plays host to fifth-placed Maniototo (16) tomorrow and it would take a huge effort for the Ranfurly-based side to overcome the competition leader.

Wakatipu has been quite impressive so far and boasts 288 points for and just 85 against from its five wins-one draw record.

Maniototo, although a little down on experience this season, should never be underestimated and will be a tough opponent.

Cromwell (18) will defend the White Horse Cup Clyde Earnscleugh (11) and this will be an interesting match-up as the challenger will have a few players fairly familiar with the home team's players and tactics.

Cromwell will need to put last weekend's game against Upper Clutha firmly behind it and there will have been some harsh words spoken this week at practice.

The Clyde Earnscleugh coaching staff, on the other hand, know this game will be a step up and a full 80-minute effort will be needed.

Matakanui Combined (4) sits bottom-equal but is far better than that suggests.

It will host third-placed Arrowtown (21) which is smarting a little from its loss at home against Wakatipu last week.

The home side is hopefully over the front row problem which meant it had to default two games, and the second-half effort last week in Ranfurly showed supporters just what it is capable of.

The visiting team needs to get back in the winner's circle and stay in touch with the competition leaders. Arrowtown has shown in patches why it was a finalist last season.

Upper Clutha (25) sits one point from the competition lead and is in really good form. It will take a top effort from a young Alexandra (4) side to topple it tomorrow at Molyneux Park.

The Wanaka-based side boasts the best defensive record in the competition, averaging just 10 points a game against it while scoring on average 34 points per game.

It should be too good for the home side unless Alexandra cuts out the defensive errors and takes all the chances on offer.

Alexandra has looked good in patches and will need to put an 80-minute effort in to knock over this Upper Clutha side.
