Stags canter home in warm-up

A large crowd converged on the central Southland settlement of Centre Bush on Saturday for a rugby extravaganza hosted by the Limehills club.

The four Southland Country Sub Unions played two 40-minute games each, before the Southland Stags played a Pacifica Invitational team.

Eastern won the sub-union fixtures while Southland had a big 82-14 win over the invitation team.

Both fields were in use when Central beat Western and Eastern beat Northern. The winners and losers were then matched against each other.

The Eastern Sub Union again showed its dominance against Central in the final. Versatile Edendale back Bram Fodie showed his class with a long-range try.

Northern beat Western in the playoff for third.

A Southland Country team was selected and will open its campaign against Southland Town in Gore this Saturday.

The Southland women's team plays its Otago counterpart in the curtain-raiser to that match.

Otago was ruled out as a preseason opponent this year, so Southland took on the invitation side and won in a canter.

The Stags led 49-0 at halftime

A knee injury to halfback Jay Renton led led to former Taranaki halfback Logan Crowley taking the field. Crowley impressed with a tidy display including some sniping breaks.

Former Stags wing Keanu Kahukura captained the Pasifika team, and former Stags No8 Mika Mafi, who has also played for Otago and North Otago, showed he can still mix it with the best.

The Stags have their final preseason game against Canterbury in Oamaru on Saturday.
