If it all goes to plan, Simon Knight should bring up his 100th premier game for Southern tomorrow.

It is a big if, though.

His partner, Tory Dougherty, is expecting the couple’s first child on Sunday. If the baby arrives a day early, then his big showdown with Taieri at Peter Johnstone Park is off and he will have to wait at least another week to bring up the milestone.

"I’m hoping she can hang on for a couple of days," Knight joked.

"It is all still 50-50 at the moment. Hopefully, it all pans out.

"Knight is a fairly patient fellow, though. The 28-year-old prop made his debut for the Southern premiers in 2009 but "a couple of nasty injuries"  - broken eye socket and an ACL injury - set him back several years.

"That was about three years of rugby I missed ... but it is pretty exciting to get to that sort of milestone Not too many people get to that."

Knight started off as a loose forward and has filled in at lock. Two seasons ago, he made the move to prop and is still learning the dark art.

Southern has a very healthy selection of props to call on. Pirates’ demise this season resulted in Otago props Craig Millar and Hisa Sasagi throwing their lot in with the Magpies. And with powerful prop Mike Mata’afa also in the mix, Knight has spent a bit more time on the bench that he might have otherwise.

But as far as he is concerned, it is not a big issue. He is still new to the position and getting to train with Millar and Sasagi is a real positive.

Knight was born into rugby family. His father, Richard Knight, played a record 170 games for Otago from 1982 to 1992, and his younger brother, Adam, has played 16 games for the province.

Adam plays for Southern as well but has been sidelined with an ankle complaint this season. He may make his playing return tomorrow.

"Hopefully, I’ll have my brother out there with me. Otherwise he can run the water out there for me."

Knight has played sevens for the province and is part of the Otago training squad. He still harbours an ambition to play representative rugby.

He would really get a thrill out of playing alongside his brother in Otago colours and that thought helps keep him motivated.

"Even to just get one game with Adam would be all right. That is a bit of a goal at this stage."

Knight, who is a carpenter, felt it was fitting he would play his 100th game against Taieri. When he moved to Dunedin in 2009 he contemplating playing for the Eels but opted for Southern.

He has enjoyed the contest over the years and is looking forward to another entertaining game tomorrow — baby willing.
