First-five McKenzie re-signs with Southland for NPC

Experienced first five-eighth Marty McKenzie has re-signed with Southland for the 2021 National Provincial Championship.

McKenzie opted against playing professional rugby last winter but continued to play club rugby for Woodlands in Invercargill.

McKenzie, who was born and raised in Gore, has played 35 games for the Stags.

He has also played for the New Zealand under-20 side, the Maori All Blacks as well as the Blues, Crusaders and Chiefs.

Stags coach Dale MacLeod was thrilled to have player of his pedigree return to the fold.

“Marty has been a professional player for 10-plus years.

"Having 2020 away has been good for Marty, he has returned fresh and keen to get back into the NPC," he said.

"I want Marty to just get out and play rugby and enjoy himself. He understands the game very well and when he expresses himself things happen.

"This will be key to unleashing the talented back line we have assembled for 2021 ”.

McKenzie captained Woodlands to the Galbraith Shield last season and will return as they look to defend their title.
