The inaugural match between the Lakes and the Counties at Omakau could not split the sides.

The match, which divided players along Central Otago club lines into two teams, ended up a 12-12 draw.

Lakes, containing players from Wakatipu, Arrowtown and Upper Clutha, led 12-7 at the break.

Counties, drawn from the two Cromwell teams, Matakanui Combined, Alexandra and Maniototo, had some ball near the end of the game.

It went hunting for a try to win the game but solid defence from the Lakes team kept the side out. Alexandra outside back Michael Murtagh-Loader scored the try to lock the scores up but the conversion missed.

The other try-scorer for the Counties side was Tyler Ford, and Ben Maxwell added a conversion.

Brodie Flannery scored a try and also nailed a conversion while Dave Fraser also got across the tryline for the Lakes team.

Lakes looked to move the ball at every chance it had but some solid defence from Counties kept it out.

Counties, skippered by halfback Maxwell, had plenty of ball and kept the most of it in close in order to make metres through its forward pack.

Each squad had 25 players so rolling substitutions were used.

Hooker Jake McEwan had an impressive game for the Lakes side and has made an impact since making his debut for Wakatipu this season. Flanker Fraser also played well for the Lakes team.

Hard-working flanker Daniel Hurring worked well for the Lakes team amd Brooke Wilson was lively on the wing. A good crowd at the Omakau domain enjoyed the nice conditions.

The game had been used as a form of a trial to give players a higher standard and put their hands up to make the Central region Topp Cup team.

The Topp Cup is to be played in Alexandra in two weeks.
