Highlanders midfielder Jason Emery was last night shown a red card in the 12th minute of his team's Super Rugby clash with the Sharks.

Emery was sent off for this dangerous play on Sharks fullback Willie le Roux in the air.

Chasing a bomb Emery leapt for the ball, only to send Sharks fullback le Roux into an awful somersault.

Le Roux landed on his head, Emery went down as well. When he recovered, he was sent off.

The Highlanders were then forced to play with 14 men for 68 minutes, and were narrowly beaten 15-14.

Our journalists are your neighbours

We are the South's eyes and ears in crucial council meetings, at court hearings, on the sidelines of sporting events and on the frontline of breaking news.

As our region faces uncharted waters in the wake of a global pandemic, Otago Daily Times continues to bring you local stories that matter.

We employ local journalists and photographers to tell your stories, as other outlets cut local coverage in favour of stories told out of Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.

You can help us continue to bring you local news you can trust by becoming a supporter.
