Banks likes to take things as they come

Nothing seems to bother Marty Banks.

Be it starting, coming off the bench, the pulse appears to be at the same rate for the first five-eighth.

Banks, who is in line to start the match in the No10 jersey for the Highlanders this week, said he did not change his preparation no matter his role.

``I try and be pretty laidback either if it is coming off the bench or starting. I do not try to get too wound up, take it as it comes and do what the coaches tell me,'' Banks said.

``To me it is about being relaxed and try not to be too full-on. Just be clear and calm. Sometimes you can't control that but I try to be ready.''

Banks was not originally named in the squad but a season-ending knee injury to Hayden Parker in January led to a call from coach Tony Brown to Banks about coming back into the team.

``It was pretty much an instant [decision]. I had two missed calls and Brownie [coach Tony Brown] said `come down'. I pretty much had packed my bag. They were half-packed, really.''

Banks had signed a contract with Italian club Treviso in the northern season but did not go.

He said it was for personal reasons that he did not head to Italy and did not want to elaborate. He will head to Italy at the end of the Highlanders' season.

For now though he is living in Dunedin and enjoying life.

``I'm back at a new flat. I live next door to Richard Buckman. He talks quite loud so it is quite hard to get to sleep at night.''

The 27 year-old said the Highlanders might have a few injuries but that was only bringing the squad closer together.

``Yeah, there are a few injuries and that is common knowledge. And in the weekend we came out with a few more. I came back from injury and expected 10 minutes but got a few more than what was bargained for.''

He picked up a knock to his knee at the Brisbane Tens, injuring his MCL, and was only now getting back to full fitness.

``I'm not fast at the best of times. I'm back to near 100% ... An injury just gives someone an opportunity and moving forward this week we have got a couple of new injuries. We have got guys coming back into the fold and can put a good team out there.

``From one to 39 we've got an unreal team. Even the boys who have come into the squad are training real well and keeping everyone honest.

``The culture is second to none ... When the new boys come in they are greeted with open arms instantly. They cop a bit of stick almost instantly if you are new to the team. In my case you cop a bit of stick every day.''
