Shannon Frizell proved a tower of strength as the Highlanders claimed a convincing win over the Blues tonight.

The blindside flanker scored three tries as the visitors proved too good at Eden Park, running out 34-16 winners.

While the Blues had the majority of the ball, the Highlanders defence proved tough to crack.

Just twice were they able to cross the line, despite dominating much of the first half.

It was the Highlanders that had the better start though, shooting out to a 12-0 lead inside the first five minutes.

Dillon Hunt charged down a Bryn Gatland clearing kick just seconds after the kickoff, following through to dive on it and score.

Minutes later Frizell crossed the line with a pick and go, being helped over by Luke Whitelock after a solid build up from a lineout near the line.

The Blues came roaring back though, scoring one of their own through Jono Ruru, before a Gatland penalty took things to 12-8.

They continued to attack, as the Highlanders were forced to make tackle after tackle, unable to get their hands on the ball.

Indeed at one point the Highlanders had made 46 tackles, compared to the Blues' four.

A second penalty to Gatland saw the score back to 12-11, but that was as close as the hosts got.

Frizell showed his ability to threaten in the open and scored out wide, before Lima Sopoaga kicked a penalty to make it 20-11 at halftime.

The second half started just as well for the Highlanders.

Tevita Li made a break and linked with Frizell, who threw a brilliant offload while being tackled by Blues No8 Akira Ioane.

That found Li, who linked with Hammington, enabling the halfback to reach out and score.

Frizell was in the action not long after, when he ran onto a ball and bulldozed his way over the line to score his third.

Tumua Manu added one late for the Blues but it was always going to be too much to come back from.
