Highlanders co-captain Luke Whitelock is a step closer to a return to the All Black jersey.

With a knee injury to veteran All Black Jerome Kaino, Whitelock is believed to be joining up with the All Blacks this week as the side prepares for the test against France.

Whitelock (26) has played one test for the All Blacks, against Japan in 2013.

The No 8 has been in outstanding form this season, and led the Highlanders to victory over the British and Irish Lions in June.

He played well for the Barbarians team in the side's close loss to the All Blacks in Twickenham on Sunday.

With Kaino picking up a knee injury in that game, the All Blacks are looking for some experience in the loose forwards, and Whitelock may answer that need.

The All Blacks flew to Paris yesterday to prepare for the test against France on Sunday morning [NZ time].
