MacLeod going from assistant to coach of Southland Stags

Dale MacLeod has been named as the new coach of Southland after players had a say in the new coach of the side.

MacLeod was the assistant coach of the Southland side over the past couple of years and takes over from Dave Hewett, who did not seek the position after his two-year contract ended.

He has signed a contract to coach the team for the next two years with an option to coach in 2022.

In a statement, Rugby South land said the selection of Mac Leod came after a thorough process.

An initial interview took place in front of a panel which included Rugby Southland general manager Brian Hopley and former Southland player and coach Murray Brown.

The process then went to the next stage where the two remaining applicants were interviewed by former Southland captain and coach David Henderson and New
Zealand Rugby coach development manager Dave Perin.

That was followed by the rather strange option of four current players of the Southland team interviewing the two applicants.

MacLeod came to Southland in 2017 having previously coached Northland and the Blues Development team.

Jason Kawau also helped coach the Southland team this year.
