Whitelock family record continues

Canterbury skipper Luke Whitelock will become the third member of his family to play 50 games for Canterbury today — yet the most successful member of the clan has not even got half that number.

Whitelock (25), who joined the Highlanders last season and has re-signed for another two years, will skipper Canterbury in his 50th game for the province.

Luke,  the youngest of four boys, gets to the half-century mark for the red and blacks, alongside oldest brother George, who played 70 games for Canterbury from 2008 to 2013, and Adam, who played 53 games for Canterbury.

Sam Whitelock, who has played 79 tests for the All Blacks, and won two World Cups, has played only 19 games for Canterbury.

George did not have a bad record.

He led Canterbury to five straight titles in that time after starting off in the Canterbury side in 2008.

He took over the captaincy the following year from Kieran Read.

Adam Whitelock first played for Canterbury in the same year as George — 2008 — and finished his Canterbury career in 2014, having played 53 games for the red and blacks.

George played one test for New Zealand in 2009 while Adam did not play international rugby.

Luke Whitelock first played for Canterbury in 2011 and played one test for the All Blacks in 2013.

Sam Whitelock played his first game for Canterbury in 2008 but has not played for the team since 2010, showing how little first-choice All Blacks play for their provinces now.

The Whitelocks have collectively played 192 games for Canterbury, but that is dwarfed by the Clarke family who had five sons who together played 401 games for Waikato in the 1950s and  ’60s.

The Goings of North Auckland played more than 300 games for North Auckland in the 1960s and ’70s.

If Super rugby appearances were counted, the Whitelocks would be well above the 500 caps mark.
