Rugby Park Stadium was under a blanket of snow on Sunday after a heavy snowfall in Invercargill.

Some rain in Invercargill yesterday meant most of the snow had disappeared by late yesterday.

Southland general manager Brian Hopley said the ground appeared to hold up all right and would be fine for the opening game of the Mitre 10 Cup when Northland visits on Thursday.

It was a rare occurrence for snow to cover the ground, Hopley said. The last time it occurred was in 2010, when volunteers were called in to clear the ground.

Southland is looking for its first win for more than two years, having not won any competition games in 2017 and 2018.
