Newbies in Stags side to play Canterbury

The Southland Stags will return to the field follow a six-week hiatus because of Covid.

They will host Premiership side Canterbury at Rugby Park and have named a side featuring a couple of newbies.

Grayson Knapp will start on the blindside flank in what will be his debut for the Stags.

Knapp plays his club rugby in Dunedin for Kaikorai but played his junior rugby in Wyndham and has family in Eastern Southland.

Pirates-Old Boys loose forward Dustin Coveney has been named on the bench as cover.

The squad also features the return of Matt Whaanga and Marty McKenzie from injury.

Rory van Vugt has returned from playing in Major League Rugby in the United States and will start on the left wing.

Daniel Lienert-Brown will bring up 50 games for Canterbury when he emerges from the bench.

Jack Debreczeni will get his first start for Canterbury at fullback, while Dallas McLeod will start at centre.

They are the only changes to the backline of the side which edged Waikato 20-19 in Hamilton last week.

Cam Bailey holds his spot on the right, along with try-scorer Waisake Naholo on the left.
