The Otago under-18 girls side has become just the second Otago junior team to win a national title although it had to go to extra time to do it.
The side made the final in Auckland against Counties Manukau over the weekend and the match was level 4-4 at fulltime. Extra time was played in which a player from each team left the field.
Every two minutes, a player is dropped off until it gets down to three players each.
The game started with five against five and Otago scored.
Counties-Manukau had the chance to reply with a score of its own which it did.
The teams then got down to four players each and it became sudden death.
Otago was patient and accurate and sealed the victory with a great cross-over middle play by Maia Joseph and Annie Timu which ended with a pass out to wing Liv Preston, who scored to win the game. The final score was 6-5 to Otago.
Tries in the final were scored by Timu, Brooke McAlwee, Olivia Fowler, Ruby Williams, Tia Valli and Preston.
The under-18 girls team won the national title in 2018.
The boys under-18 and under-16 team just missed out on the playoffs on points differential.
