NZR confident coming Lions tour a sellout

There are still tickets left for the match between the British and Irish Lions and the Highlanders but up the road they have all gone.

New Zealand Rugby released a statement yesterday outlining ticket sales for the nine games the Lions will play in New Zealand.

The three tests against the All Blacks — two in Auckland and one in Wellington — went to a public ballot which was heavily oversubscribed with more than 150,000 applications.

New Zealand Rugby said, overall, 75% of tickets for the nine matches had been sold and clearly demand was high.

NZR general manager of the NZ Lions Series 2017, Nigel Cass, said with just over 100 days to go, preparations were on track to deliver one of the largest sporting events ever held in New Zealand.

The tour kicks off in Whangarei with a match against a New Zealand Provincial Barbarians side  on June 3.

The Highlanders are scheduled to play the Lions on June 13 at Forsyth Barr Stadium.

New Zealand Rugby said there were very limited category A and B tickets still available for the game, with category C and D tickets also available.

A and B category tickets were in the north and south stand while C and D tickets are for the stands at the end.

There are only single seat tickets left in the A category. NZR declined to provide the actual number of tickets left.

The stand at the Otago Daily Times end of the ground is scheduled to be put up and there was confidence the ground would be sold out.

The only disappointment about the match was it was unlikely to feature any All Blacks as the side is due to go into camp a couple of days before the match is played.

The match against the Crusaders, to be played on June 10 has sold out.

There is strong demand for other games  and New Zealand Rugby is confident of a sell-out of all games.

In addition to  the games, there events  are to be staged around them. The Dunedin City Council was unable to confirm yesterday it had any plans regarding the Dunedin game.
