Five forwards concussed

This is probably going beyond the call of duty.

The Otago rugby team is the subject of a University of Otago concussion study - and now five of the side's forward pack are out of tomorrow night's game against Northland because of concussion.

In an unusual set of circumstance and coincidences, lock Josh Dickson and loose forwards Adam Knight, Dillon Hunt, Lee Allan and James Lentjes, are all unavailable for the game at Forsyth Barr Stadium tomorrow night.

Knight was carted off the paddock in the side's first game against Southland on August 21 after a nasty collision, while Allan received a blow to his head near the end of that game.

Dickson got a knee to the head in the match against Wellington on Thursday night and Hunt had an elbow to the jaw in the same game.

Lentjes has a bruise on his temple and was pulled from tomorrow night's game after he complained of headaches.

With rest and recovery, it is hoped two or three of the players will come right for Sunday's game against Bay of Plenty.

The team was taking part in a university study this season, wearing monitors behind their ears, to test whether neck strength influenced the force put on the head, leading to concussion.
