Players looking to impress

There is very much an experimental look to both teams from Otago and Canterbury which will take the field at Forsyth Barr Stadium tomorrow.

The Sassenachs, a shadow Otago side, will take on the Cantabrians, a team from red-and-black land, in a pre-season match, with the opening games of the domestic competition looming in a couple of weeks.

There are some interesting names in the Otago side, which has been stripped of all of its Super rugby players.

They are on leave after the season came to the end for the Highlanders last weekend.

The whole Otago squad will be named late today for the Mitre 10 Cup, the new name for the domestic competition.

Youngster Thomas Umaga-Jensen gets a start at second five-eighth.

He has been out for the bulk of the season with a hip injury and only came back into club rugby with a couple of weeks left in the season.

He will pair up with the experienced Michael Collins in midfield.

Former Tasman and Force winger Mitchell Scott starts on one wing, with Fa’asiu Fuatai on the other.

After impressing in 2014, Fuatai missed all of last season because of a shoulder injury.

Hawke’s Bay import Jonathon Ruru gets the start at halfback inside former Southlander Scott Eade.

Eade is in with a chance of slotting into the position in the No 10 jersey but he will have to show plenty of direction with his boot.

Paul Grant will start at No 8 and he will be joined in the loose forwards by Dillon Hunt and Adam Knight. Blair Tweed and Josh Dickson, whois over a knee injury, will lock the scrum.

The Sassenachs side has named more then 10 reserves and there are bound to be plenty of changes at the break as players look to get their chance.

Loose forward Lee Allan is named on the bench and will be keen to make an impact after missing all of last season with concussion.

If there is an experimental look to the Otago-based side, the the Cantabrians also have plenty of new faces.

Canterbury also has a raft of players  on leave.

There are promising youngsters such as first five-eighth Ere Enari and lock Hamish Dalzell but the side is bound to look to use its bench throughout the game.

It is the first time the sides have met in a pre-season game for more than eight years, so it will be interesting to see the level of intensity and the strength of combinations.

The Otago side will head to Queenstown for a camp next week, where it may get more of the Super rugby players back. Its first game in the Mitre 10 Cup is against Southland, on August 21.
