Matt Faddes, Tom Franklin, Sam Anderson-Heather and Jack Wilson all scored tries in a half of complete dominance for the home side.

They dominated territory and possession, obtaining forward momentum and attacking well out wide. It was with the boot that they created much of their pressure though, hoisting a series of bombs and chasing well. Wellington did not handle this tactic well, dropping several balls, allowing Otago to pounce in good field position.

When they ran they were slick, playing with width and keeping the ball alive. Defensively they were equally outstanding, ensuring the Wellington attack went nowhere when they had the ball and scrambling back well in cover when they had to.

Both teams traded tries after the break, before Wellington fought their way back to a 35-21 scoreline as the game began to disintegrate. Through that stage Otago became loose, as mistakes crept into their game and they began falling off tackles.

Wellington were unable to complete the comeback though, as Otago worked their way into position to kick three late penalty goals.
