Rugby: Jones sculpture confirmed for Eden Park

A larger-than-life statue of Michael Jones diving to score the 1987 Rugby World Cup's first try will be displayed at the redeveloped Eden Park for this year's event.

Auckland artist Natalie Stamilla said the sculpture, which she estimates will cost around $300,000, will be cast of bronze.

Stamilla said today she had been able to secure funding to cover all costs related to the sculpture, which will be placed on permanent loan at Eden Park.

The design is based on a photograph by Geoff Dale, Stamilla's father, who worked as a press photographer during the 1987 tournament.

The sculpture pattern has just been completed, and casting is expected to begin shortly to ensure it will be completed and installed by August.

The Rugby World Cup begins on September 9 at Eden Park with a match between New Zealand and Tonga, and ends at the same venue with the final on October 23.
