Paul Williams moved closer to emulating his famous father yesterday when he was called into the All Black squad preparing for tomorrow's test against England.

The Highlanders fullback, who has just turned 25, was drafted in as cover for Mils Muliaina, who received a slight hamstring strain this week at training.

Muliaina was on light training duties yesterday and medical staff indicated they would wait until today to assess whether he could play in his 58th test, at Eden Park.

Williams was chosen in the draft squad before being released but, like Highlanders halfback Jimmy Cowan and Hurricanes prop John Schwalger, has been recalled to assist with the growing injury list.

He has made a strong return to top rugby after breaking his leg badly several years ago and then suffering complications and is now on the cusp of rivalling the All Black honour first bestowed on his father, Bryan, on the tour to South Africa in 1970.

If Muliaina is ruled out of tomorrow's test, Leon MacDonald will start at fullback and Williams is likely to be used from the bench where he can cover both wing and fullback. - Wynne Gray
