Rugby: World Cup broadcasts for deaf

Seven Rugby World Cup (RWC) 2011 games will carry live captions for the hearing impaired, Broadcasting Minister Jonathan Coleman said today.

Mr Coleman was responding to questions in Parliament from Green MP Catherine Delahunty, who asked whether he would ensure accessibility to RWC broadcasts for the deaf community.

"Television New Zealand is the only New Zealand broadcaster that has the ability to carry out the live captioning of matches," he said.

"It is broadcasting seven RWC games live, including the final, semi-finals, the bronze final, two quarter-finals, and the opening match, and all seven will feature live captioning."
