South Otago beaten, Southland Boys' advance

South Otago High School were beaten in the South Island co-ed First XV final in Balclutha today, while Southland Boys’ High School claimed a big win in the boys' schools final.

South Otago went down 20-14 against Christchurch's Burnside High School, a school nearly five times its size.

Meanwhile Southland Boys’ were dominant in beating Christchurch Boys’ 41-20. The win, a week after toppling the Otago champion John McGlashan College, sees them advance to the national top four next week.

Further north Auckland champions Mount Albert Grammar won the Blues region final, beating Westlake Boys’ 13-8.

Hastings Boys’ continued their impressive season, winning the Hurricanes final by beating Wellington College 40-14. Hamilton Boys’ High School pipped defending national champions Rotorua Boys’ 26-24 to claim the last top four spot.

Feilding High School beat Wairarapa College 31-15 in their co-ed playoff, while St Mary’s beat Feilding 58-12 to join Hamilton Girls’ and Southland Girls’ in the girls schools top four.
