A couple of young Otago backs have been picked for national development squads to play in the Oceania championships in Fiji this weekend.

University fullback and Otago utility Taylor Haugh has been picked in the men's side while Otago Spirit centre Amy du Plessis has been selected in the women's side.

Haugh previously played for the men's senior national team in Cape Town last year and is also a former national touch representative.

Du Plessis is from Southland originally and has impressed while playing at centre for the Otago Spirit this year. She has also been picked for the Ignite sevens camp this month.

She missed the final of the Farah Palmer Cup championship because of concussion but has been selected for this weekend's sevens.

Southland winger Alena Saili has also been selected for the squad.

The women's side includes Portia Woodman, who missed the past year after injuring her Achilles.

Our journalists are your neighbours

We are the South's eyes and ears in crucial council meetings, at court hearings, on the sidelines of sporting events and on the frontline of breaking news.

As our region faces uncharted waters in the wake of a global pandemic, Otago Daily Times continues to bring you local stories that matter.

We employ local journalists and photographers to tell your stories, as other outlets cut local coverage in favour of stories told out of Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.
