As Otago heads into the Mitre 10 Cup championship final tomorrow, rugby writer Steve Hepburn walks down memory lane to previous finals the side has played.

It is not overly happy reading for an Otago fan: the side has played in seven finals and won just one.

1992 v Waikato, Hamilton, lost 40-5

After an epic win over North Harbour at Carisbrook when the game was won in extra time, Otago ventured north to play Waikato in the first final played in the domestic competition.

But it all went wrong for the visiting side as the Mooloos ran rampant. Matt Cooper scored 17 points with his boot and halfback Simon Crabb scored a couple of tries.

But the game was best remembered for Richard Loe's eye-gouging of Otago fullback Greg Cooper.

1993 v Auckland, Auckland, lost 27-18

Had the revenge over Waikato in the semifinal with a solid 36-22 victory at Carisbrook. Then had the tough task of heading to Auckland.

Was almost all over by halftime with Auckland up 20-3. Otago came back to score a couple of tries in the second half. Josh Kronfeld had his cheekbone smashed by a Jason Chandler fist.

1995 v Auckland, Auckland, lost 23-19

Colin Hawke, Auckland scrum, penalty try, enough said.

1998 v Waikato, Dunedin, won 49-20

Otago got on a roll with its returning All Blacks and could not be stopped. It smashed Taranaki in the semifinal and then ran away from Waikato in the final in the second half.

Byron Kelleher and Brendan Laney were to the fore and Waikato simply had no answer. Played in front of a packed Carisbrook on a sunny Sunday afternoon.

2001 v Canterbury, Christchurch, lost 30-19

Up against a tough Canterbury outfit, Otago held on for much of the game but failed to get enough points when the opportunities came along.

Eventually, the walls broke and Justin Marshall scored a key try. Otago tried hard but could never get close.

2005 v Auckland, Auckland, lost 39-11

Made the final after a truly outstanding effort to beat Canterbury in Christchurch, but did not have a lot of energy left in the tank.

Had to travel to face a fired-up Auckland side that ran away with the game in the second half. Josh Blackie scored a nice try for Otago.

2012 v Counties-Manukau, Pukekohe, lost 41-16

After some entertaining rugby throughout the season and a thrilling victory over Tasman in the semifinal, the side journeyed to Pukekohe for a tough match against the Steelers.

Otago hung in but lacked an attacking thrust and the Tana Umaga-coached team ran away with the game in the final 20 minutes.
