Carr secures silver medal for Otago

Neptune's Ben Carr claimed a medal for Otago on the opening day of the national open championships.

The 18-year-old finished second in the 50m butterfly final in Auckland. He swam 24.81sec, edging third-placed Chris Dawson by 0.07sec.

Daniel Hunter, of Howick Pakuranga, swam an impressive 23.99sec to claim gold.

Neptune's Erika Fairweather put on an impressive display in the 800m freestyle to achieve the selection time needed to qualify for the Junior Pan-Pacific Championships.

The 14-year-old, by far the youngest competitor in the race, swam 8min 57.60sec to finish fourth.

She was one of six swimmers to achieve a selection time for the championships on day one.

She also qualified fourth for the 200m freestyle final in 2min 04.64sec.

Former Dunedin swimmer Carina Doyle, now of the North Shore club, qualified fastest for that final.

The 2018 Commonwealth Games representative swam 2min 00.39sec. She was also part of the North Shore 4x400m freestyle relay team which took gold.
