Otago swimmers were among the medals on day one at the national age-group championships.

Erika Fairweather led the way at the Sir Owen G Glenn National Aquatic Centre in Auckland, winning Otago’s only gold.

The Neptune swimmer blitzed the girls 14 100m freestyle field to win in 57.47sec.

That allowed her to beat second-placed Aimee Crosbie, who swims for United from Auckland, by more than 2sec.

Fairweather was also in the Makos team which claimed silver in the girls under-15 800m freestyle zonal relay.

In that, her team swam 8min 46.05sec, missing out on gold by 0.5sec.

Neptune’s Jessica Scott and Zenith’s Tame Govaerts-Paul had to settle for silver after being narrowly pipped.

Scott swam 2min 24.99sec in the girls 15 200m butterfly, 0.1sec behind first place.

Govaerts-Paul was even closer, swimming 29.20sec in the boys 16-18 50m breaststroke, finishing 0.02sec off gold.

He was also in the Makos boys 16-and-over 800m freestyle zonal relay team which finished third in 7min 58.37sec.

Corbin Fraser, of the Oamaru club, got in on the action in the boys 12-13 50m breaststroke.

He swam 34.93sec to secure bronze.

Cecilia Crooks, Gabrielle Trotter and Caitlin Deans were all in the Makos girls 16-and-over 800m freestyle zonal relay team which finished third in 8min 56.71sec.
