Otago competitors fared well against a 19-strong Australian contingent at the Otago winter championships at the weekend.

Neptune's Erika Fairweather was a standout in the girls 12-13 grade.

She narrowly missed out on her age-group's national short-course 400m freestyle record in 4min 23.52sec, and claimed four golds through the first two sessions.

Geoffrey Kemp, of Neptune, was another to impress, the 15-year-old fighting off several of the visitors to claim five golds.

Courtland Ellis, also of Neptune, also excelled, securing four golds and a silver, while Zenith's Tame Govaerts-Paul claimed four golds.

Neptune women Caitlin Deans and Devon Familton (both 17) went head to head several times, Familton claiming two golds and two bronzes and Deans securing three golds and a silver.

Deans had Familton's number in both the 100m and 200m backstroke, winning the races in 1min 03.88sec and 2min 15.68sec respectively. Familton finished third in both.

However, Familton got one back in the 50m breaststroke, swimming 35.50sec to pip Deans by 0.17sec.
