Otago has finished with three medals at the national open championships in Auckland.

Wanaka Paralympian Hamish McLean won his second on Saturday night, a gold in the 50m para-butterfly on the final day of the championships in Auckland.

He swam 37.06sec to win his final, in which he was the only competitor.

It was his second final of the night - he also finished sixth in the 100m para-freestyle.

Neptune's Caitlin Deans and Zenith's Steffanie Gillespie were Otago's only other finalists on the last night of the championships, both in the 1500m freestyle.

Deans fell just short of a medal, finishing fourth in 17min 22.38sec, while Gillespie was ninth in 18min 04.85sec.

McLean comes away with two medals, having won silver in the 400m freestyle earlier in the championships.

Neptune's Andrew Trembath, who secured a bronze medal in the 400m individual medley, was the only other medallist.

North Shore Swimming Club finished as the top club at the event, with 1859 points.

New Zealand qualified a men's 4x100m relay team for the world championships, joining the 4x100m women's medley team.

A record eight New Zealand swimmers qualified for 10 events at the world championships at the meeting.

Para swimmer Sophie Pascoe was named swimmer of the year at a ceremony on Saturday night.
