Swimmers take to Lake Dunstan just above the Clyde dam on New Year’s eve in a distance swim event.

The Otago and Southland triathlon clubs picked the right day to hold a open water swim event in Lake Dunstan.

The event took place on what was predicted to be the warmest day of summer so far, and more than 50 swimmers took to the lake in the morning, by the Dunstan Arm Rowing Club.

There were various categories to line up in. Xander Marsh won the 3000m swim in a time of 42min 6sec.

Janus Staufenberg, one of four Staufenbergs in the race, won the 1500m swim, in a time of 17min 8sec, finishing 18sec ahead of his brother Julius.

Mia Graham was the fastest over 1000m in a time of 13min 28 sec, while Katie Lawrence won the short 500m swim in just under 10 minutes.

Our journalists are your neighbours

We are the South's eyes and ears in crucial council meetings, at court hearings, on the sidelines of sporting events and on the frontline of breaking news.

As our region faces uncharted waters in the wake of a global pandemic, Otago Daily Times continues to bring you local stories that matter.

We employ local journalists and photographers to tell your stories, as other outlets cut local coverage in favour of stories told out of Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.
