George Scott (5), of Waikouaiti, keeps his eye on the ball during a tennis fun day at Forsyth Barr Stadium on Sunday.

Previously, rugby, league, drift racing, football, basketball, concerts and showjumping had been held under the roof.

The stadium was said to be multi-use when it was being constructed and, although it is yet to host a netball or baseball match — which were suggested when it was being built — tennis was played for the first time under cover at the stadium on Sunday.

Tennis Otago held a tennis exhibition day for youngsters to come along and have a go at the sport at the covered venue.

There were some smaller courts for first timers and also some full-sized courts for those players who had swung a tennis racquet before.

The tennis was played on the concrete pad on the Otago Daily Times stand end of the stadium.

Tennis Otago held the day to get children interested in the game. Competition tennis will start late next month.
