The Open started last night with preliminary qualifying to get into the main draw.

The event has attracted 64 entries —  the largest field in its 30-year history —  with 47 men and 17 women lining up.

The event was cancelled five years ago due to lack of numbers but major changes, including new formats and fresh sponsorship, have resulted in entries from as far as Auckland and the Southern Lakes area.

Knockout play will take place today before finals begin tomorrow at 10.30am. The women’s final will start on the show court at the Edgar Centre no earlier than 1pm tomorrow and will be followed by the men’s final.
