St Hilda’s Collegiate’s Amelia Newlands (16) plays a forehand during yesterday’s Otago secondary schools teams tennis championships at Logan Park.

The tournament attracted 11 teams of two players each from around the region, including three teams from Wanaka. They  were split into championship and cup divisions.

Teams faced  a doubles match and  two singles matches in the best-of-three ties.  All teams played roughly three ties during the day. St Hilda’s Blue duo Mya Haigh and Claudia Christie won the championship, while Mount Aspiring Gold pair Lochie Hunt and Kalan Nichol won the cup.

Tennis Otago operations manager George McLenaghen said it had been a successful day and the tournament had not been affected too much by the Alert Level 2 status.

Our journalists are your neighbours

We are the South's eyes and ears in crucial council meetings, at court hearings, on the sidelines of sporting events and on the frontline of breaking news.

As our region faces uncharted waters in the wake of a global pandemic, Otago Daily Times continues to bring you local stories that matter.

We employ local journalists and photographers to tell your stories, as other outlets cut local coverage in favour of stories told out of Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.

You can help us continue to bring you local news you can trust by becoming a supporter.
