New Zealand women's No 1 Marina Erakovic exited tennis' US Open in the first round this morning, losing in three sets to Croatia's Mirjana Lucic.
Erakovic was guilty of failing to make the most of her opportunities to lose 6-4 2-6 6-4 to the 29-year-old Lucic.
The world No 90 could only convert five of her 13 break points, while Lucic, ranked six places below the Aucklander, was more efficient, converting five of her nine break point opportunities.
Lucic broke serve twice in the opening 49-minute set while Erakovic could only manage one break.
In the second set, Erakovic battled back to break the Croat three times and take the set and looked well on the way to taking the match.
But Lucic, with two singles titles to her name, refused to yield, nailing her only two chances to break serve, despite Erakovic upping her first serve percentage to 65 percent.
The 23-year-old had six chances to break Lucic, who has twice reached the third round at the US Open, but could only convert one in a tough 50-minute final set.
