Tennis: Top seeds advance at NZ tennis champs

The top seeds all progressed safely to the quarter-finals of the New Zealand tennis championships at North Harbour today.

Men's top seed Dan King-Turner beat Waikato's Jaden Grinter 6-2 6-0 and second Artem Sitak had a similarly comfortable win over Stefan Williams 6-3 6-1. Sitak will now face 2006 champion and tournament seventh seed Adam Thompson who beat Queenstown's Riki Mclachlan 6-4 6-4.

Eighth seed Adam Lee was beaten by promising 17-year-old Cameron Norrie from Auckland in a clash which lasted well over three hours and Norrie will now take on fourth seed Sebastian Lavie, who battled past the big forehand of Marco Comuzzo to win in straight sets.

Top women's seed Di Hollands cruised through her first match, beating Gabriela Coates 6-1 6-0, but fourth seed Emma Hayman was taken to three sets by Auckland junior Claudia Williams.

Aside from the prizemoney, the winners of the tournament receive a wildcard into qualifying for the ASB Classic and Heineken Open. The New Zealand Davis Cup and Fed Cup teams will also be announced on Sunday.
