Rogers in the second seed in the women’s field. First-round action starts today.
The event began yesterday with a couple of preliminary games in the men’s field. The Open has attracted 39 competitors, many of them students who have recently arrived in the city.
Mitchell Sizemore won the event last year, beating Paddy Ou in the final. Ou is second seed and Sizemore is seeded three.
Student Alex Calder, a former national junior champion from Wellington, is the top seed.
The women’s top seed is Emilia Price, from Queenstown.
The women’s competition was won last year by Rileigh Fields, who is not defending her title.
