Dunedin is to join the America's Cup party when the Auld Mug heads south next week, it has been confirmed.

Emirates Team New Zealand chief executive Grant Dalton this afternoon accepted Dunedin's invitation to attend a parade in the city.

The parade will include 25 members of the sailing team, together with the America's Cup, and would be held at lunchtime on Thursday, July 13.

Dunedin Mayor Dave Cull said he was "thrilled Team New Zealand has accepted our invitation to bring the ‘Auld Mug’ south, and I know the people of Dunedin and surrounding areas will be keen to celebrate with the team".

Dunedin's event would follow Auckland’s lead, being staged during the lunch hour from about midday until 1pm.

It was expected to follow the same route as University of Otago graduation parades, starting at the Fredrick St end of George St and finishing in the Octagon, council staff indicated.

More details would be confirmed later.

Dalton confirmed today they would be taking the Cup to some other centres around the country next week.

''We look forward to taking the Cup to Wellington on Tuesday. Christchurch is in planning for Wednesday and for Dunedin on Thursday," Dalton said.

"We will make sure we tour the Cup to the provincial centres, the heartland of New Zealand where the real people live."

Today fans turned out in droves in Auckland, from all over the country, to welcome the victorious Team NZ.
