Rubbish equivalent to the weight of two and a half buses has been removed from Christchurch's residential red zone.

Land Information New Zealand, which manages the area, said 25 tonnes of dumped rubbish has been cleared.

This included mattresses, tyres and green waste.

LINZ said all rubbish is sorted, separated and if possible recycled.

Last year, LINZ extended road barriers and bollards to try and stop people illegally dumping rubbish and anti-social behaviour.

LINZ said the measures has helped reduces the amount of rubbish being dumped but hasn't stopped it.
