Another storm is forecast for Canterbury on Wednesday after Christchurch was hit by a tornado and hail on Monday.
While no tornadoes are expected this time around, thunderstorms, hail and heavy rain is forecast to become widespread across Canterbury from either late morning or early in the afternoon.
The MetService says if the thunderstorms occur, they are likely to be accompanied by localised heavy rain with intensities of 10-25mm per hour and hail of 5-15mm in diameter.
The Metservice says temperatures in the upper atmosphere over the South Island are expected to cool on Wednesday morning and early afternoon, making conditions more unstable in Canterbury with hail and thunderstorms expected. Graphic: MetService
The extreme weather and tornado on Monday saw two people injured at the SaveMart second hand shop on Battersea St, Sydenham, with buildings damaged and power cut to more than 1000 homes in Christchurch.
