Christchurch City Council is working with the owners of several vacant, underused and untidy properties in New Brighton to improve the vibe of the area.

City council case management and relationships team leader Jo Anderson said while a lot of progress has been made since the September 2010 and February 2011 earthquakes, some signs of the damage are still visible in the suburb's commercial area.

Anderson says several privately owned properties remain vacant or underused and, in places, appear untidy or in need of improvement.

"We refer to these as 'barrier sites' because, in their current condition, they can unintentionally discourage investment and development.

"They can also influence how people feel about the area and, in some cases, affect access to nearby roads or footpaths.”

"Improving these sites can help create a more welcoming environment for residents and visitors, including a greater sense of safety, particularly after dark."

Anderson said New Brighton is a high priority area for the council, with several significant projects planned or already underway.

They include ongoing upgrades to the commercial centre and mall, the future extension of the City to Sea Pathway, and the replacement of the Pages Road Bridge.

"We recognise that property owners have faced a range of challenges over the past 15 years.

"As New Brighton continues to move forward, now is a good time to work together to improve the appearance and usability of these sites, much like the progress seen in the central city."

The city council is also encouraging property owners to maintain vacant sites and parking areas, including removing materials, litter and weeds, dealing with graffiti, and improving or refreshing hoardings.

Where owners have plans for their sites, the city council will need applications for the necessary consents so redevelopment can move ahead.

"By working together, we can help ensure New Brighton continues to grow as an attractive, vibrant place for residents, businesses, and visitors alike," Anderson said.
