Climber who died on Banks Peninsula named

A climber whose body was found on Banks Peninsula on Monday has been named.

He was Matthias Kerkmann, 54, of Lincoln, a police spokesperson said.

Police were alerted at 8.30pm on Sunday that Kerkmann was overdue from a rock climbing trip in the Peraki area.

The area was searched that night but the teams were hampered by poor weather and darkness, and Kerkmann could not be located.

Police said the search continued on Monday and the man's body was found at 10.45am.

"Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones at this difficult time," the police spokesperson said.

Kerkmann's death has been referred to the Coroner.

His family have asked for privacy, the spokesperson said.
