He was 56-year-old George Sun, of Christchurch.
"Police extend their sympathies to his family," a police spokesperson said.
The death has been referred to the Coroner.
The police national dive squad located the body near Akaroa Harbour about 4pm.
Searches for the diver had been taking place since Wednesday afternoon.
