Fire crews battled a blaze that broke out in a bedroom of a two-storey house in Christchurch on Monday.

Emergency services were called to the fire on Patricia Pl in Harewood about 12.15pm.

Initially an occupant was thought to be inside the house but this was not the case.

Fire and Emergency spokesman Brent Dunn said the house was "well involved" by the time fire crews arrived.

He confirmed no one was in the house at the time of the fire.

"There was a suspicion that there was still somebody in the house.

"The crews conducted a search of the building and have confirmed that there are no persons unaccounted for and there are no injuries to anyone at the scene."

A fire investigator is looking into the cause of the fire which is understood to have started in an upstairs bedroom.

Patricia Pl was cordoned off during and after the incident. Two fire trucks, police and an ambulance were at the scene.
