A 22-year-old man has been charged after a woman was stabbed in St Martins on Wednesday.

The man will appear in the district court on Thursday afternoon charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

The incident happened on Gamblins Rd about 11.30am, near the New World supermarket.

The woman remains in a serious but stable condition in Christchurch Hospital, said Detective Senior Sergeant Nicola Reeves.

She said police are not seeking anyone else in relation to the incident.
