The crash on Opawa Rd (SH76) near the intersection with Brabourne St in Hillsborough occurred about 8.30am.
St John spokesman Gerard Campbell confirmed an ambulance was called to the scene and a man had been taken to Christchurch Hospital with critical injuries.
The crash blocked the southbound lane but it has now reopened.
On Saturday, two people were killed in two separate South Island crashes.
One person died in a crash near Lincoln and the other in a crash near Athol, Southland.
