Man jailed after first Christchurch strangulation prosecution

A 32-year-old Christchurch man has been jailed for threatening to kill his ex-partner while he squeezed her neck in a headlock.

Shadon John Woodstock was sentenced to two years and nine months by Judge Tony Couch who said the threat to kill was "clear and repeated".

It was the first prosecution in Christchurch for the charge of strangulation since the Government changed the law in December to make it a standalone offence.

Strangulation had previously been regarded as an aggravating feature on assault charges.
