Riccarton Rd cordoned off after gas leak

Emergency services cordoned off a busy Christchurch street due to a gas leak on Monday night.

Fire and Emergency NZ shift manager Daniel Reilly said the leak was caused by a digger, which struck a gas line on Riccarton Rd near the intersection of Straven Rd.

He said crews remained at the scene for about an hour from 10.50pm.

"A gas line was hit by a digger," he said.

"We cordoned off the area and provided fire protection until the gas authority was able to make the situation safe," he said.

Fire crews from the Spreydon and Christchurch City stations responded.

Emergency services were taking no risks with the leak after six people were injured and several properties were damaged in a gas explosion in Northwood in July last year.
