Virtual tour of Main North Rd shows planned bus lane upgrade

A fly-through video has been released showing how a busy Christchurch road will look once bus priority measures are introduced.

Citycare has begun work on installing northbound bus lanes along Main North Rd between Winston Ave and Sawyers Arms Rd in Papanui.

The new northbound bus lanes aim to improve the reliability of travel times for public transport up and down Main North Rd.

There is already a southbound bus lane on Main North Rd between Mary St and Homer St that operates in the morning peak.

As part of the new bus priority measures, this lane will start operating in the afternoons as well.

Changes to the Northlands Shopping Centre entrance will also be made and new traffic lights will be put in at the intersection of Main North Rd and Grassmere St.

The work, which is budgeted to cost about $2.5 million, is expected to take six months to complete.
