Waimakariri Bridge traffic diverted overnight

More beams will be lifted onto the Waimakariri Bridge overnight on Friday.

Traffic will be diverted onto the northbound lane from 6pm until 6am. There will also be a temporary 60km/h speed limit in place.

The work is part of the $240 million Northern Corridor project to widen it, adding a high occupancy vehicle lane as well as a separated cycleway.

NZ Transport Agency spokesman Colin MacKay said Friday night's operation will see the final installation of all "large structures" for the bridge deck.

"We will continue with lifting smaller metal spans for the shared use path/clip-on cycleway with a smaller crane on the side of the bridge –  but we will not need contraflow traffic management for this," he said.

He said there will be some traffic delays in October due to concrete pours.

"We are making good progress and we are on schedule to complete the work on the bridge before Christmas 2019," he said.
