One dead after two-vehicle collision in North Canterbury

A motorist has died and another was critically injured in a collision on a North Canterbury road.

Emergency services were called to the crash on Tram Rd at about 7.29am on Tuesday.

A police spokesperson confirmed a person had died in the "two-vehicle collision".

It is understood the crash occurred after one of the drivers crossed the centre line.

A St John spokesman said a person with critical injuries was transported to Christchurch Hospital.

NZ Herald photographer George Heard said a trapped motorist was freed by fire crews.

The serious crash unit was at the crash site, and a truck was on the side of the road.

A police spokesperson said diversions will be in place and motorists are asked to avoid the area.

"Police would like to thank motorists for their patience.

"Anything further will be issued proactively when we are able to."
