One dead, three injured in Selwyn crash

One person has been killed and three people injured when a car and van collided in rural Canterbury last night.

Police were called to the scene on Main South Rd in Bankside, Selwyn, about 10.30pm.

One person died and two others were taken to Christchurch Hospital in a serious condition.

Another person sustained minor injuries, a police spokesman said.

Inquiries are continuing, he said.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokeswoman Lyn Crosson said two crews from Rakaia and Dunsandel were sent to the scene after receiving reports of a “head-on” collision between the two vehicles.

Crews rescued at least one person and then helped manage traffic at the scene, she said.
